Summer in Vietnam is relentless. From Hanoi's humid haze to Saigon's punishing afternoon sun, the heat is a real force — and every city demands a different strategy. The good news is that Vietnam's cities are full of cool corners, if you know where to look. This is our city-by-city guide.
We continue to update this list as we discover new inspiring venues.
Hanoi
Cafés & indoor escapes
Tranquil — A Hanoi institution tucked into the Old Quarter. Multi-level, atmospheric, and reliably cool.
Hanoi Social Club — Laid-back café and music venue with strong coffee, good food, and a crowd that takes its time.
Avos and Mangoes — A bright, plant-filled spot with an all-day menu built around fresh, seasonal produce.
Mộc Nguyên Cà Phê — A quieter, more contemplative option. Traditional Vietnamese feel with excellent drip coffee.
Bluebird's Nest — A cosy neighbourhood café, ideal for a slow morning away from the street noise.
Other ways to escape the heat
West Lake (Tây Hồ) at sunset — The lake breeze in the late afternoon transforms the whole atmosphere. One of the most pleasant hours in the city.
The Vietnam Museum of Ethnology — Air-conditioned, genuinely fascinating, and rarely crowded in the morning. Worth far more time than most visitors give it.
Spa Huong Sen — Traditional baths and sauna followed by a massage, circuit-style. Several locations across Hanoi.
Secret Cocktail Experience — Begins at 5pm, when the heat has softened. Four intimate venues in the Old Quarter, none of them obvious from the street.
Hoi An
Cafés & indoor escapes
Kaimai Coffee Shop — A small, considered space: AC, a garden, a concept store, and a library all in one.
Halcyon Beach Club — Cocktails by the water, with live music on weekends. The sea breeze does most of the work.
Rosie's Café — A leafy courtyard with deep shade and a relaxed rhythm. The kind of place you stay longer than planned.
Buttercup — A charming café with good pastries and a calm interior that feels removed from the tourist trail.
The Inner Hoi An by Ala — Elegant, quiet, and thoughtfully designed. A nice contrast to the busy lanes outside.
Cafe Slow — The name says it all. No rush, good coffee, the right pace for a hot afternoon.
Reaching Out Teahouse — A silent café run by people with hearing disabilities. Expect delicious tea, calm, and quiet.
Other ways to escape the heat
Cua Dai Beach — 4km from the Old Town and quieter than An Bang, with palm shade and clean water.
Naia Spa — A well-regarded escape for a proper treatment in cool, unhurried surroundings.
Cham Islands day trip — Cooler on the water, and the snorkelling keeps you below the surface where the temperature drops noticeably.
Modern Culinary Experience — Starts at noon, moving between air-conditioned venues by electric car. A good way to eat your way through the city without melting.
Da Nang
Cafés & indoor escapes
Con Market area — Less a single spot than a full morning: browse in the shade, eat your way through local snacks, and let the market do the entertaining.
Daun Got Cafe — A small café with DJs playing all day, a strong Korean aesthetic, and the kind of atmosphere that makes an hour feel like ten minutes.
XLIII Specialty Coffee — Serious coffee in a clean, calm space. A reliable anchor for the morning.
Esco Beach — Where the beach meets a proper bar setup. Good for late afternoon when the sun angle changes and the sea breeze picks up.
Other ways to escape the heat
Bà Nà Hills cable car — At 1,487 metres, the air is genuinely cooler. The Golden Bridge views are worth the trip up.
My Khê Beach, early or late — Before 9am or after 4pm, the water is calm and the sun manageable. The middle of the day belongs to someone else.
Saigon
Cafés & indoor escapes
Lacaph — Specialty coffee done seriously, in a space that rewards slowing down.
Vintage Emporium — A relaxed, characterful café with a nostalgic feel that sits well against Saigon's relentless pace.
The Workshop — A Saigon staple. Reliable, well-made coffee and a good crowd at any hour.
Refinery — Set in a converted French opium refinery, it's one of the more atmospheric spots in District 1 for an afternoon drink.
Little Hanoi Egg Coffee — A small outpost bringing Hanoi's signature drink south. Rich, sweet, and best enjoyed slowly.
Other ways to escape the heat
The War Remnants Museum — Mostly indoors, air-conditioned, and a genuinely powerful experience. Not a light afternoon, but an important one.
Secret Cocktail Experience — Starting at 5pm, moving through some of Saigon's most atmospheric hidden bars. The city reveals a different side of itself after dark.
Vietnam in summer is warm and loud and unapologetic about it. But the cities here have always known how to offer shelter — in a shaded courtyard, a cold glass, a breeze off the water. You just have to know where to look.
